PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The BROWIN 405551 Universal Hydrometer is a versatile measuring instrument designed for home winemaking and beer brewing.
This practical device allows you to measure sugar concentration in wine must and beer wort and estimate the potential alcohol content that may be produced during fermentation.
Unlike basic sugar meters, this universal hydrometer features three measurement scales, providing useful information for monitoring and planning the fermentation process.
Whether you are preparing homemade wine, fruit wine or beer, this easy-to-use instrument is a valuable addition to your home brewing equipment.
3 MEASUREMENT SCALES
Measures sugar concentration using the Balling scale. This reading helps determine the initial sugar content of wine must or beer wort and monitor changes during fermentation.
Provides an additional sugar concentration scale expressed in grams per litre. Useful for understanding sugar levels when preparing homemade wine or beer.
Estimates the potential alcohol content based on the sugar concentration of the liquid before fermentation.
This scale helps home brewers estimate the possible alcohol strength of their finished beverage under suitable fermentation conditions.
KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS
Combines two sugar concentration scales and a potential alcohol scale in one instrument.
Suitable for testing wine must, fruit wine must and beer wort during home production.
The clearly marked colour zones help users identify useful sugar concentration ranges during different stages of preparation.
Regular measurements allow you to observe changes in sugar concentration as fermentation progresses.
The supplied measuring cylinder provides a convenient container for testing liquid samples.
No batteries, electrical connections or additional power supply required.

HOW TO USE
STEP 1 - PREPARE YOUR SAMPLE
Fill the measuring cylinder approximately two-thirds full with wine must or beer wort. The liquid should be free from solid particles and excessive gas bubbles.
STEP 2 - INSERT THE HYDROMETER
Carefully lower the hydrometer into the liquid. Allow it to float freely without touching the bottom or sides of the measuring cylinder.
STEP 3 - READ THE SCALES
Allow the instrument to settle and take the measurement at the liquid surface. Read the appropriate scale to determine sugar concentration or potential alcohol.
STEP 4 - MONITOR FERMENTATION
Repeat sugar measurements during fermentation to observe changes and help determine when the fermentation process is approaching completion.
The instrument is calibrated at 20°C. For reliable measurements, use liquid samples close to this temperature. Remove excess carbon dioxide bubbles before taking readings.
UNDERSTANDING POTENTIAL ALCOHOL
The potential alcohol scale estimates the alcohol strength that could be achieved if the fermentable sugars are converted into alcohol during fermentation.
For example, a reading of approximately 20°Blg corresponds to roughly 200 g/L of sugar and indicates a potential alcohol content of approximately 9.6% according to the manufacturer's measurement example.
This instrument does not directly measure the actual alcohol content of finished wine or beer. The potential alcohol reading is an estimate based on sugar concentration before fermentation. Actual alcohol content depends on fermentation conditions and sugar conversion.
